In the spirit of love, St. Valentine disregarded the ban and performed secret marriages. In result of his disobedience, he was executed on February 14.
The second theory is that the day originated from Lupercalia, a harsh Roman Festival on February 15 where men stripped naked and spanked young women in hopes of raising their fertility.

While it’s not known whether its legends are true, the holiday is observed as a day for expressing love between family members, friends and most especially of couples.
